In-dependence
People often think that being independent means living in isolation, not needing anyone, and keeping an emotional distance from others. However, this idea is far from the truth. True independence is not about rejecting company or avoiding emotional closeness. In many cases, being overly independent tends to be seen as an antisocial or asocial trait, a kind of barrier that prevents human connection.
For some, extreme independence may even be seen as indifference or apathy, interpreted as a lack of interest or care. But here, it’s important to clarify: being independent doesn’t mean being insensitive or incapable of forming deep bonds. Someone who claims independence as an excuse for not caring about you, not calling you, or showing no interest, simply isn’t emotionally invested.
This concept leads me to think about the term “in-dependence.” With this term, I want to offer a new perspective: the balance between independence and the desire for connection. An in-dependent person is someone who is fully self-sufficient, capable of being happy with their own achievements, interests, and goals. This person is in charge of their well-being, enjoys their hobbies, values their relationships, and finds satisfaction in personal growth. But at the same time, they are aware that having someone special in their life adds an additional happiness.
In-dependence means knowing that you can be happy on your own, walking your own path without needing someone else’s constant presence, but it also means recognizing that life becomes even fuller when shared with someone you love. In-dependence is achieving a balance, being able to feel complete on your own while also enjoying the company that complements you, understanding that true independence doesn’t exclude the possibility of sharing, loving, and creating bonds. In this sense, the real challenge is not choosing between independence or company, but integrating both in a harmonious way.
